Mission-Driven Entrepreneurship™

Mission Driven Entrepreneurship™ is our series of innovative education 'Hacking for' (H4) programmes, designed to transform how learning intersects with the real world.

What sets Mission Driven Entrepreneurship™ apart is its unique synthesis of academic rigour and practical problem-solving. Our courses – including Hacking for Ministry of Defence (H4MoD), Hacking for Sustainability, and Hacking for Police – are more than just educational modules; they are incubators for future change-makers.

H4 Programmes

H4MoD

In 2017, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) expressed interest in growing the US ‘Hacking for Defense’ course in the UK, to engage university students to work on defence and security problems. Common Mission Project launched 'Hacking for MoD' in January 2019, and has partnered with the MoD to scale our Mission Driven Entrepreneurship™: H4MoD to 25 universities by 2024.

By connecting university students to the MoD, CMP is contributing to the UK’s national security innovation base. By bringing the talent of hundreds of students and multiple universities into national security and defence, we can meet the challenges of our time together.

H4 Sustainability

In February 2021, the Common Mission Project launched its ‘Hacking for Sustainability’ course at Newcastle University. This was the first course of its kind, dedicated to solving problems related to climate change and sustainability. This course continues to run at Newcastle and has added Bournemouth University to the Spring term.

H4 Police

‘Hacking for Police’ piloted at Hull University in Spring 2022, the first course of its kind dedicated to solving policing problems that range from national issues to the local community. CMP launched this pilot in partnership with the Accelerated Capability Environment (ACE) - a Home Office unit that takes a highly innovative and disruptive approach to solving technology and data problems facing public sector agencies, primarily in law enforcement and national security.

How Our Hacking 4 Courses Work

Here, learning isn’t confined to the lecture hall. Instead, it's an active, hands-on journey where interdisciplinary teams of university students tackle current government challenges head-on. These challenges are not theoretical case studies; they are real, unclassified problems sourced directly from government departments.

The Participants: Government, Students & Industry

Our approach is grounded in the belief that the most pressing problems of our time need fresh perspectives and innovative solutions. By immersing students in Lean Start-up methodology and connecting them with actual government problem sponsors, we're educating and empowering a new generation of thinkers and doers.

Course Outcomes and Impact

Students emerge with enhanced career skills, a deeper understanding of complex issues, and in some cases, continue their journey by forming start-ups or further collaborating with their sponsors.

How H4MoD pushes students to achieve more

Two alumni talk us through the key takeaways from H4MoD, their thoughts on working with Ministry of Defence, and what their future careers look like.

Our pioneering approach brings together UK Government, Academia and Industry, asking them to focus on the problem, not the solution.
