Innovating the Future

Introducing ‘Project TIGER’ Team

“The TIGER teams’ unique vantage point is precisely what the MOD needs to drive positive change and meet the evolving needs of modern Defence. Project TIGER is not just a talent pipeline, it's a catalyst for innovation that is already playing a crucial role in helping us to navigate and solve Defence problems.”

- Lt Gen Charlie Stickland, Chief of Joint Operations.

In the ongoing search for top-tier talent in the UK defence and security sector, the Hacking for MOD (H4MOD) course has emerged as a game-changer. This accredited university programme not only raises awareness of critical defence work, but also attracts a diverse and talented pool of students, with over 80% expressing a desire to join the sector after completing the course. But that's not where the story ends – the H4 course goes beyond career aspirations. It's a launchpad for government careers, arming students with essential transferable skills for immediate job readiness. What sets it apart? A curriculum that gets students to apply innovative commercial methodologies to real-world defence and security problems.

Enter Project TIGER, a new initiative that aims to solidify this talent pipeline. In September 2023, 11 former H4MOD students started two-year work placements in the heart of the Ministry of Defence. Project TIGER embodies a problem-focused approach, navigating defence challenges with Lean and Agile principles. This dynamic team tackles pressing challenges from within the MOD.

Insiders with Outside Eyes

The impact of Project TIGER on the MOD is tangible. The team, with its mix of academic, cultural, and experiential backgrounds, introduces fresh perspectives and diversity of thought. For TIGER team member Naila Golamnobee, this proves invaluable in promoting unrestricted thinking and fostering innovation within the defence sector. Another team member, Mike Knight, has the aspiration to inject a new capability into UK Defence, acting as a 'critical friend' and providing alternative recommendations, demonstrating the team's commitment to driving positive change.

The TIGER Team's unique vantage point allows them to navigate the traditional and hierarchical defence structures, rapidly validating and addressing problems. Project TIGER is essentially an “in-house consultancy which currently sits as somewhat of an insider with outside eyes.” notes team member Alex Haywood.

H4MOD: Inspiring Careers in Defence

The TIGERs’ journey is deeply rooted in their experience with the H4MOD course. Beyond imparting innovative methodologies, H4 played a pivotal role in shaping their desire to work in defence. For team member Hannah Aries, the similarity in work style between H4MOD and Project TIGER was a key motivator. The interaction with Defence personnel during their H4 projects was also pivotal. For Mike, he found the enthusiasm of Defence personnel for his team's work encouraging, fuelling his desire to pursue a career in the MOD.

Alex reflects on his H4 experience, "Working on H4MOD shattered many of my preconceptions about Defence. The collaborative and open nature of the personnel I met spurred me to get involved." The skills they developed – teamwork, interviewing, presenting, and the confidence to engage with high-ranking personnel – are now invaluable assets in their current roles.

Eyes on the Future: What Lies Ahead?

The future is full of possibilities for the TIGERs.

  • Naila anticipates continued skill development and knowledge enhancement.

  • Mike is looking forward to the unexpected, anticipating shifts in global events that could pivot priorities.

  • Hannah values the opportunity to actively drive change straight out of her Master's degree, being able to not only research topics she is interested in, but work on them also.

  • Andreea, like her colleagues, is excited about industry immersion, networking, and bringing innovative ideas to fruition.

Collectively, the TIGERs envision the team and its concept growing in both size and importance, providing immense value for defence. Project TIGER stands as a testament to the success of the H4MOD course in inspiring careers in defence and creating a dynamic talent pipeline that challenges norms and shapes the future of UK Defence.

This is the first in a series of blogs that will document the TIGERs’ journey as they develop their skills and their impact within this role over the coming 18 months. Keep checking back here or via LinkedIn for updates.
